2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake
In December of 2004, a 9.1 magnitude earthquake struck in the Indian Ocean. The quake resulted in tsunamis that claimed the lives of over 230,000 people, and displaced over 1.5 million people in 14 countries. So many people perished because there was no tsunami warning system in place, and no one knew just how big and powerful the resulting tsunamis actually were. The economic and rebuild costs exceeded over 10 billion dollars, and some areas have not fully recovered, even to this day. This earthquake goes to show how devastating they can be, even if they occur off shore in an ocean.

Nepal Earthquake of 2015
On April 25th, 2015 a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal and changed its landscape forever, and the effects and reconstruction continue to this day. Around 9,000 people were killed by that quake, over 650,000 families displaced, and over 600,000 homes were destroyed. The economic impact of the quake can still be seen today in many areas in Nepal, and is estimated to be around 7 billion dollars. The earthquake was so powerful, it moved Mt. Everest by an inch, and triggered avalanched on the mountain where many were rescued, but a total of 18 climbers died. Today many people are still homeless, or living in shelters. Many of the houses have yet to be rebuilt, and the economy is still struggling to recover. This earthquake shows how devastating and life changing earthquakes can be, and how much the true cost actually is.
